The Great Unfolding: A Rise in Consciousness
The Great Unfolding: A Rise in Consciousness
Understanding our evolution and the current rise in conscioiusness
By Donalee Gastreich
We are living through something extraordinary.
Not just technological revolution. Not just societal shifts. Something deeper. Something that has been whispered by mystics, mapped by scientists, and proclaimed by visionaries for millennia.
A rise in consciousness.
It’s happening now. In boardrooms and meditation halls. In laboratories and living rooms. In the quiet moments between overwhelm and the desperate search for something more.
But to understand where we’re going, we must first understand where we’ve been—and the lineage of thinkers who have been pointing toward this moment all along.
What Is Consciousness?
Before we go further, let’s ground ourselves.
Consciousness is not merely awareness. It is not simply being awake or alert. At its deepest level, consciousness is the capacity to perceive, experience, and interact with reality—not just through the mind, but through the totality of your being: body, mind, heart, and soul.
Think of it as your operating system. The lens through which you see everything. The filter that determines what you notice, how you interpret it, and how you respond.
Most people operate from a limited lens—one shaped by conditioning, fear, survival, and external validation. It’s like looking at the world through a keyhole and believing that’s all there is.
Higher states of consciousness are like opening the door.
You begin to see more. Not just with your eyes, but with your entire being. You perceive patterns, connections, and meaning that were always there—you just couldn’t see them before.
It’s not about escaping reality. It’s about seeing reality more clearly—and responding from a place of wholeness rather than fragmentation.
Most proclaim greater meaning and purpose, a deeper connection with life itself, and more intimate and loving relationships.
The Myths About Higher Consciousness
Let’s clear up a few misconceptions:
Myth 1: It’s about escaping the world.
Reality: It’s about showing up more fully in the world—more grounded, more present, more effective.
Myth 2: It requires years of monastic isolation.
Reality: It requires inner work, yes—but that work happens in the midst of your everyday life. In your relationships. Your work. Your challenges.
Myth 3: It’s only for the “spiritually gifted.”
Reality: It’s available to everyone. It’s not a special talent. It’s a birthright.
Myth 4: It means never feeling negative emotions.
Reality: It means experiencing emotions fully—and choosing your response rather than being controlled by them.
Myth 5: You either have it or you don’t.
Reality: It’s a spectrum. A journey. A practice. You don’t “arrive”—you expand.
The Lineage: Those Who Saw Before Us
The current rise in consciousness is not a new phenomenon. It has been prophesied, mapped, and explored by visionaries across centuries—each one seeing a piece of the puzzle, each one calling us forward.
Let’s walk through the lineage, from the earliest to the most recent:
1. G.I. Gurdjieff (1866–1949)
The Fourth Way
Gurdjieff observed that most humans live in a state of “waking sleep”—mechanically reacting to life rather than consciously choosing. He developed the Fourth Way, a practical path of inner work that could be integrated into everyday life rather than requiring monastic withdrawal. His teaching was simple: awaken. Become present. Stop being a puppet of your conditioning.
2. Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925)
Anthroposophy
Steiner bridged the material and spiritual worlds, teaching that human consciousness is evolving through distinct stages. His work on Anthroposophy (meaning “wisdom of the human being”) offered a path of spiritual science—a way to perceive higher realities through disciplined inner development. He believed we are becoming capable of perceiving dimensions of reality that were once invisible to us.
3. Nikola Tesla (1856–1943)
Energy, Frequency, and Vibration
Tesla’s revolutionary insight went far beyond electricity. He proclaimed that to understand the universe, we must think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration. This wasn’t just physics—it was a spiritual truth. Everything, including our thoughts and emotions, operates at a frequency. To change your life, change your frequency.
4. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881–1955)
The Noosphere and Omega Point
Teilhard, a Jesuit priest and paleontologist, envisioned humanity evolving toward a global consciousness he called the Noosphere—a layer of collective thought and spirit enveloping the earth. He pointed toward the Omega Point, a maximum level of complexity and consciousness toward which the universe is converging. He saw evolution not as random, but as purposeful—moving toward greater unity and love.
5. Carl Jung (1875–1961)
Individuation
Jung believed the goal of human development was individuation—the integration of all parts of the self, including the shadow, into a whole and balanced being. He taught that we must confront the parts of ourselves we’ve repressed, integrate them, and become more fully who we are. His work laid the foundation for modern understanding of the psyche and its role in spiritual growth.
6. Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)
The Perennial Philosophy
Huxley articulated the idea of the Perennial Philosophy—the universal truth that lies at the heart of all major spiritual traditions. He believed that a common human yearning to experience the divine exists across all cultures and times. His work reminded us that we are not alone in this journey; we are part of a long and beautiful thread.
7. Abraham Maslow (1908–1970)
Self-Actualization
Maslow revolutionized psychology by studying not what was wrong with people, but what was right. His Hierarchy of Needs placed Self-Actualization at the pinnacle—the drive to become everything one is capable of being. He studied the healthiest, most fulfilled individuals and discovered that they shared a common thread: they were fully themselves. They embraced their uniqueness and lived from a place of authenticity and purpose.
8. Ram Dass (1931–2019)
Be Here Now
Ram Dass, born Richard Alpert, was a Harvard psychologist who journeyed to India and returned with a simple yet profound message: be here now. His book of the same name became a cornerstone of the spiritual awakening movement, teaching that the present moment is the only place where life actually happens. He showed us that love, service, and presence are the pathways to awakening—and that we are all “walking each other home.”
9. Terence McKenna (1946–2000)
Psychedelic Exploration and the Logos
McKenna was an ethnobotanist, mystic, and visionary who explored the role of psychedelics in expanding human consciousness. He believed that altered states—accessed through plant medicines—revealed dimensions of reality inaccessible through ordinary perception. His famous “Stoned Ape Theory” proposed that psychedelics played a catalytic role in human evolution. McKenna’s work challenged us to take our inner exploration seriously and to recognize that consciousness itself is the great frontier.
10. Michael Murphy (1930–)
The Future of the Body
Founder of the Esalen Institute, Murphy documented thousands of cases of supernormal human attributes—from mystics to athletes—in his book The Future of the Body. He argued that these extraordinary capacities are not anomalies, but the “developing limbs of our evolving human nature.” We are growing into something more.
11. James Redfield (1950–)
The Celestine Prophecy
Redfield’s novel brought spiritual awakening into the mainstream consciousness in the 1990s. His message: we are experiencing a spiritual awakening as a species. Synchronicities are increasing. Intuition is becoming more accessible. A new understanding of reality is emerging—one that honors connection, purpose, and the unseen forces that guide our lives.
12. David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D. (1927–2018)
The Map of Consciousness
Hawkins developed a calibration scale of consciousness—from 1 to 1,000—that maps the full spectrum of human awareness. He identified levels ranging from shame and fear to courage, acceptance, love, and ultimately enlightenment. His work provided a practical framework for understanding where we are and where we’re capable of going.
13. Ken Wilber (1949–)
Integral Theory
Wilber created one of the most comprehensive maps of human development ever conceived—Integral Theory(AQAL). His framework honors multiple perspectives, multiple levels of development, and multiple lines of intelligence. He has shown that consciousness is not a single track but a multi-dimensional landscape, and that true growth requires integrating all aspects of our being.
14. The Monroe Institute (Founded 1971)
Gateway Process
Founded by Robert Monroe, the Institute has been systematically mapping expanded states of consciousness for over 50 years. Through Hemi-Synctechnology and programs like the Gateway Voyage, they guide participants into states of expanded awareness—including “Focus 10” (mind awake, body asleep) and beyond. The CIA even evaluated their work, concluding there was “a sound and rational basis” for considering the process plausible. Over 20,000 people have been through their residential programs, and interest has surged 35% since the pandemic.
15. Gregg Braden (1954–)
Pure Human
Braden, a five-time New York Times best-selling author, brings a contemporary and urgent message. His 2025 book, Pure Human, arrives at a pivotal moment—as AI and transhumanist technologies threaten to fuse humans with synthetic systems. His core argument is radical: the qualities that make us human—emotional intelligence, intuition, compassion, creativity, and forgiveness—may be the most powerful technologies of all. He warns that within a single generation, we risk losing our capacity for these gifts if we cede our power to external technologies.
Meditation: The Common Thread
What is striking about this lineage is that virtually every single one of these figures—from Gurdjieff to Braden—pointed to meditation as the foundational practice for accessing expanded states of consciousness.
Not as an escape. Not as a luxury. But as a necessity.
Ram Dass sat at the feet of his guru. The Monroe Institute uses Hemi-Sync to guide participants into meditative states. Hawkins calibrated consciousness through sustained inner stillness. Even Tesla—the scientist—understood that quieting the mind opened doors to insight that logic alone could never reach.
Meditation is not about emptying your mind.
It’s about training your attention. Quieting the noise so you can hear what’s already there. Accessing the wisdom, intuition, and clarity that are your birthright.
Every one of these visionaries understood: the answers are within. Meditation is the key.
The Crossroads: AI and the Future of Humanity
We now sit at a crossroads unlike any in human history.
The development and explosion of AI is not just a technological shift—it’s an evolutionary one. And how we respond will determine the course of humanity for generations to come.
Three paths are emerging:
1. The Pure Human
This is the path of inner evolution. The human who chooses to develop their consciousness, emotional intelligence, intuition, and heart coherence. The human who sees technology as a tool, not a replacement. The human who remembers that no algorithm can replicate love, compassion, creativity, or presence.
Gregg Braden’s Pure Human speaks directly to this: our divinity, power, and destiny lie not in merging with machines, but in activating what we already are.
2. The Hybrid Human
This is the path of integration without domination. The human who uses technology to enhance—but not replace—their humanity. Brain-computer interfaces, biofeedback, wearable tech that optimizes health. These tools can support our evolution if we remain the driver, not the passenger.
The danger? Ceding our sovereignty to external systems. Letting algorithms think for us. Allowing technology to define what it means to be human.
3. The Mechanically Altered Human
This is the path of transhumanism—where biology is “upgraded” with synthetic parts, chips, and AI integration. Where consciousness is uploaded. Where the line between human and machine dissolves entirely.
The question is not whether this is possible.
The question is: what do we lose in the process?
What happens to the soul? To intuition? To the sacred dimension of being human that no algorithm can touch?
The choice is ours.
And it’s being made now—in boardrooms, in policy debates, in the quiet decisions of individuals.
Will we outsource our humanity to technology? Or will we evolve from the inside out—becoming so fully us that we become irreplaceable?
The Theology of Bringing All of Us to the Party
This brings us to the heart of my work.
We are not just minds to be optimized or bodies to be enhanced.
We are body, mind, heart, and soul—dynamic, life-force energy evolving just as rapidly as any technology when our focus and intention are directed within.
My theology is simple:
Bring all of you to the work you do.
Not the fragmented you. Not the performative you. Not the conditioned, reactive, ego-driven version of you.
All of you. The quirks, the shadows, the gifts, the fears, the love, the purpose, the power.
Because here’s the truth:
When you bring all of you, you unlock something extraordinary. You become more than productive—you become generative. More than successful—you become significant. More than efficient—you become essential.
Activating Heart Intelligence
The heart is not just a pump. It’s a brain. A center of intelligence that communicates with the mind, the body, and the world around us.
When we learn to activate heart intelligence, we shift from the survival-driven patterns of the lower brain to the coherence and clarity of the heart. We access intuition. Compassion. Creativity. Connection.
Heart coherence is not woo-woo—it’s science and the work of HeartMath Institute. And it’s a game-changer for leadership, for relationships, and for life.
The ABCs to Breakthrough
My work is grounded in a practical framework:
A – Awareness
See what’s really happening. Within you and around you.
B – Being
Align your energy. Clear the noise. Come back to center. Bring all of you.
C – Curiosity
Integrate body, mind, heart, and soul. Wonder and curiosity open pathways to more.
EnQ: The Game-Changer
EnQ is my signature approach—a methodology for activating coherent energy in business, leadership, and life.
When you are in coherence, you are:
-
Unyielding to external chaos
-
Clear in your vision and decisions
-
Magnetic to the right opportunities and people
-
Aligned with your highest purpose
It’s not about controlling others. It’s about monitoring, managing, and mastering yourself.
And from that place, you lead. You create. You thrive.
What They All Knew
Across centuries, cultures, and disciplines, the visionaries we’ve explored shared a common understanding:
1. Human potential is vast and largely untapped.
We are operating far below our true capacity.
2. The path is inward, not outward.
Not accumulation. Not status. Not external validation. The work is within.
3. Consciousness itself is the technology.
Tesla’s “energy, frequency, vibration.” Monroe’s Hemi-Sync. Braden’s heart-brain coherence. The instrument is us.
4. We are at a choice point.
From Teilhard’s Omega Point to Braden’s crossroads with AI, there’s a shared sense of urgency. Humanity is evolving, and the direction is not guaranteed.
5. This is not escapism—it’s leadership.
None of these figures taught withdrawal. They taught presence. Integration. Responsibility.
6. The heart is the gateway.
Whether through meditation, psychedelics, or heart-centered practice, the path to higher consciousness runs through coherence.
What Is the “New Earth”?
You’ve heard the phrase. But what does it actually mean?
The New Earth is not a physical place. It’s not a utopia we wait to arrive. It’s a shift in consciousness—a new way of perceiving and relating to life.
It’s the recognition that:
-
We are interconnected, not separate
-
Inner peace is not dependent on outer circumstances
-
Our thoughts, emotions, and intentions shape our reality
-
We are co-creators, not victims of our lives
-
The old ways—consumption, competition, ego-driven achievement—are giving way to collaboration, purpose, and soul-aligned living
The New Earth is emerging right now, in the hearts and minds of those who are choosing to wake up. It doesn’t require waiting for the world to change. It requires changing how we see the world—and then acting from that new seeing.
A Note for Business and Leadership
This is not just personal development. It’s a business imperative.
The old model of leadership—command and control, ego-driven, focused solely on numbers—is crumbling. It cannot hold in the face of the complexity we face today.
What’s emerging is conscious leadership:
-
Leaders who know themselves
-
Leaders who bring all of themselves to the work they do
-
Leaders who operate from alignment, not pressure
-
Leaders who create cultures of trust, creativity, and purpose
Because here’s the truth:
AI can process data. It cannot process soul.
Technology can optimize systems. It cannot optimize human connection.
Machines can generate outputs. They cannot generate meaning.
The future belongs to those who remember what it means to be fully human.
The Invitation
You are standing at a crossroads.
On one side: the old path. Behavior modification. Groupthink. Consumption. Status. Ego-driven achievement that looks impressive on paper but leaves you hollow at the core.
On the other: the path of inner growth. Healing. Letting go. Exploring. Trusting. Becoming more of who you truly are.
The old path built careers.
The new path builds lives.
The choice is yours. And it’s made not once, but every single day—in how you show up, what you prioritize, and who you choose to become.
The lineage is clear.
From Gurdjieff to Braden, from Tesla to The Monroe Institute, the message has been whispered—and sometimes shouted—for generations:
You are programmable by design.
The question is: who or what is doing the programming?
The old path programs you from the outside in—through environment, conditioning, fear, and ego.
The new path? You take back the controls.
Claim Your Power
This is what my work is about.
